Chapter Summary

In a former hotel turned secret club, Offred discovers it's a gathering place for high-ranking officers and foreign delegates, where women deemed unfit for Gilead society - former professionals and scholars - serve as entertainment, the Commander justifying it as necessary for business and men's "natural" needs. In a shocking moment, Offred spots Moira among the women in costume, and they exchange signals to meet in private, forcing Offred to make an excuse to the Commander about needing the washroom.

So now the pair have arrived at the club. (Has anything changed? This place calls to mind such locales as The Sopran’s Bada Bing, a strip club the mafia men congregate at to do business and release a little steam.) But here we have an underground or secret club used as a form of letting off steam or even rebellion, but all due to being a part of a privileged patriarchy. There’s definitely a vibe of exclusivity, as perverse as that may be. The part about the glass elevators looking like giant mollusks really reminds me of Scales and Tails from the Maddaddam Trilogy—as well as the seashells covering up lady bits later. Types of mollusks to the left. Offred says she feels “shorn” of her white wings. Sheep are shorn. Sheep are docile and easily led. Jesus is often depicted as a shepherd guiding sheep. She’s experiencing a torrent of complex emotions. Though she’s being led like a sheep, she’s also (to some small extent) benefiting from the rebelliousness, being able to partake in this underground adventure in lasciviousness and licentiousness....
